What is a good rod/reel combo for inshore red drum, popping jigs and stuff like that? *rod*

There are a lot of good choices out there. But it is going to depend on your budget. My preference is Shimano Rods and Reels. I use a couple of different series of rods. One is a 7' Crucial model# is a CRS-70ML that rod is rated for 4-10 lb line and a lure weight of 1/16 to 5/16 oz, power is medium light, and it is a fast action. The other is a 7' Teramar Inshore Series model# TMS-70M it is rated for 8-17 lb line and a lure weight of 3/8 to 1 oz, the power is medium and the action fast. I use a Stradic 2500 on the Crucial and a Stradic 4000 on the Teramar. The light action rod I use mostly with light jigs and MR 17 Mirrolures. The medium rod I mostly use for spinner baits.

Theres probably 100 different rods that 100 different people would like. But the above is probably the average, 6-8ft medium action usually with a fast tip anywhere from 6/8-18lb line rating.

Shimano makes a decent rod, i think the Crucials are around $150

We have a pair of Okuma Avenger bait feeder combo's. While I'm not an expert, they get good reviews, folks I've talked to like them and IMHO are well built. I wouldn't put them next to the top of line Shimano & Penn, but feel they are a cost effective alternative and are readily available online in different sizes.

I agree with Ol'Weezy. Can't beat the old Penns. Had good Penn combos myself almost thirty years ago. Sold boat, camper, most of my tackle, still beating myself up over it. Had taken up flying, thought I would never go back to boating and fishing. Oh well "Never say never". However, I guess old Penns might be found on E-Bay.

all of mine are 7ft or 7ft 6in. I really like an assortment of Med light, med, and med heavy depending on lures, jigs, spoons, or live bait. I really like Kunan Rods for the money with a quality 2500 or 3000 series reel like shimano or daiwa or the penn sargus

For me nothing beats a swedish made ambassadeur 6500 with 7ft med action ugly stik inshore series rod. Dont get me wrong I love my 3/0 4/0 and 6/0 penns but for lighter stuff and casting Ive always enjoyed the garcias. As for spinners I use Daiwas just because they havent let me down but I too have been looking at and hearing great things about the newer penn spinners. Going back to rods it just depends on what style of fishing youll be doing but as was mentioned a good all purpose is 7ft medium weight with a fast action weighted for 8 to17lb line.

You can't beat Shimano for just about price range, style or line class. I just picked up the new Chronarch and it is a sweet reel. I also use Curados, Stradics and Saros.
For the type fishing you asked about, I'd look into the 7' fast action, medium power, rod built on, preferably, a popping style blank. These rods have a light tip for throwing popping cork/live bait combos but more than enough power in the butt to land large fish.
If something custom is in your price range or if you have something special in mind, let me know and I can probably get you in touch a custom builder in your area.
