What's the forum's recommendations for VHF antennas and mounting (type and mounting position). I have no top. Just a standard dlx with large console. Thought about putting one of the short whip-type antennas on one of the grab rails. Only concern is getting it snagged while casting. I have two boys, and sometimes we get to slinging things around pretty good. On my old boat, anything that stuck up above the console was apt to get caught on the back side of a cast.

Shakespeare Galaxy series you can't go wrong. As far as location, you have to give some more info.T-top or no , bimini or no. 006
If you have t-top best place is up there.I you have bimini, somewhere on the gunnel in the rear so you can snake the wire up to the console. If you do not have t-top or bimini, best place on the grab rail around the windshield.

I have sold comunications equipment for 34 years.
I will be using my DLV on inland lakes/rivers and will use only a hand held vhf.
I talk around 50 mi. with a 8 foot antena on the c-hawk in NC its tIp is 16 foot above the water line. mounted radios have 25 watts good hand held's only have 5 watts some cheep ones have less
IT would be great advice to get a radio with digital distress such as the UNIDEN Oceanus around $129.00 basspro cabelas overtons ect. I recomend it due to the dependabilaty and 3 year warranty after that their is a low price guaranteed replacement/trade .
Their are however many other good radios with digital registration distress that identifes the unit as you/your vessel if registred not required to work.
As for antena the higher it is the better. make sure not to ball up the extra coax cable in a tight ball , kind of spend it out in large loops under the console to avoid problems ,mount with most or all of the antena in free air space.
