View Full Version : Florida keys
Back from Florida with my grandson . Fished , snorkeled , swam with dolphins and parasailed. Grandson Gavin caught a six foot lemon shark and a three foot black tipped shark. No Tarpon though despite two trips . Great trip overall .[ATTACH=CONFIG]13030

I love the Keys! We were towing the boat down for weekends, 6 or 8 times a year, when things were better. Where did you stay? We have a favorite place in Islamorada, and know the waters in that area. Key Largo has the best snorkling and diving. Key West can be a little freaky, but I love the history that it's steeped in.
Sounds like you had a good time.
I think I'll pull out the Jimmy Buffet CDs... (The locals down there hate it, but I don't care.:secret:)

We stayed first in key Largo at a place I won,t name , Beautiful setting terrible hotel. We went out on the snorkeling boat at John Pennycamp state park and dove on the coral reef there . Grandson loved it we saw a lot of Barracudda and other fish . We moved to Islamorada and this time stayed in the Hampton Inn which was great . Guide took us from there all the way across Florida bay to Flamingo in the everglades to fish . A one hour trip. Caught only the sharks there didn;t even see Tarpon . We moved on to Marathon and stayed at Holiday Inn which was also nice . Went out on another charter who broke down at least fifty times was running south to I think it was called Bahia Honda key . Saw Tarpon jumping but he did not want to fish along the way , wound up going back because of the boat issues and got a full refund . Drove down to Key west , interesting place . Went to Historic seaport section and parasailed . Grandsons favorite part of the trip.Would have liked to have spent more time there sightseeing but had to head back up north to make our early morning flight home. Overall a great trip no major issues and didn't get lost once probably due to GPS in rental car. Would like to go back again for Tarpon and this time take my wife along .Take care .

Thanks for the detailed report! Sounds like you covered just about everything. I've never been as far up in the bay as Flamingo. I've always wanted to put in at Everglades City and follow the coast down around Cape Sable and across Florida Bay from that direction, ending up in the Keys somewhere. You'd need up to date charts and a good compass.
