I've owned outboards for over 30 years and I'm also a believer that you "get what you pay for". I'm also a firm believer in networking, two heads are better than one, etc. etc. I owe this tip to my friend and fellow CSO member redneckredfisher. Once in a while I learn of something that actually works better than a more expensive item. The Attwood Motor Flusher picuted below is one of those items. The more expensive variety, shown on the right, does not seal as well (on my Suz DF 140) as I would have suspected, even though the rubber boots are rectangular in shape and it sports a (strong appearing) steel clamp. Other round boot models were not large enouth to completely cover my intake vents on this motor. The molded, plastic handled attwood model has round boots that do cover the intake and it seals better and consequently works better than any other motor flusher I've seen or owned - under $5 at WalMart or most anywhere else it's sold.

Willie, I moved it over here. If you think the topic would be better somewhere else, please move it - I'm still learning ;D

IMO the post should be here.

Dave, I have the rectangular style and logic would say that since you have rectangular intake holes then that style would be the obvious choice. Like you, it's hit or miss getting the thing to seal up properly. I have to mess around at the hose bib to regulate the water flow so that the water is not blowing out around the paddles.

Thanks for the tip! It's a low cost solution to an aggravating problem.

I have the rectangular too, use them on a 225 optimax and 250 yamaha and it works good.Any idea why is not working well on the suzuki?
So, do you recomend the attwood vs the other one?

NEM, if you are getting a tight seal, without a lot of flooding, leaking around the rubber boot, (at all but the very lowest water pressure) then you should stick with what you have. Until I used this cheapo model, I didn't know what a really good seal was and how well it visibly and substantially improved proper water intake and distribution. I also have a 2 stroke 150 HP Suzuki (on a SeaCraft CC) and found the same to be true with it.

Well, i do get water leaking out of the sides, but i thought that is normal.I've seen the same way the marina guys do it.The attwood brand seals completely ? No water spits out of the sides?

1) I've seen the same way the marina guys do it.

2) The attwood brand seals completely?

3) No water spits out of the sides?

1) That dosen't surprise me. I've seen a few other things Marinas do that I wouldn't necessarily do to my own boat/motor.

2) No but it's a whole lot better seal than I've ever seen. Your experience may be different, possibly if you have a professional grade model. This one is a cheapo model and I can't imagine a pro grade model working any better.

3) Very little, compared to the other type shown, or other's I've used in the past.

It's only 5 bucks and you might be able to buy it local. If you do and don't like it, you can always take it back or like in my case with the first one, I'll send it to the dump the next time I go - I don't even remember for sure where I bought it. The secret to the one I recommend, I believe is the strength of the clamp arms and possibly the slightly different rubber composition??? Anyway, I felt strong enouth about the difference that I posted a topic devoted to this simple, oft taken for granted, device.

Yep, that the more expensive "pro" grade model. Puts water in from both sides. I expect it works well too. thumbsup

I slide a chain link connector up on mine to hold a little more pressure.Works fine.

If I remember correctly the instructions on the ones that I have used have said to turn on the water untill it is squirting out the sides. That way you know you have enough pressure on. As long as you have a good stream coming from the water exit tube, and all the other exit areas, I would think your getting a good washdown. How would you tell the difference.....
