Going to Oak Island the end of March. Have a 238DLV. Any of you guys fished the reefs with a boat of my size? Have the GPS to get to them. The inshore fishing can be slow that time of year down there and was hoping to try some near shore reefs for some bottom fish. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

yellowdog, While you're waiting on some other replies... the NCDMF has a reference to all the AR's off the NC coast. You can get the GPS numbers, what the reef is constructed from, when it was established.

yellowdog,

In March you got to deal with the winds. On a calm day you'll have no problem in a 238DLV, I've gone out in a 19' Sea Pro in less than ideal conditions to the nearshore AR's and wrecks[there are quite a few within 10 miles] and I'm still here. The inside bite for trout is usually pretty good at the end of March it all depends on water temp. 2 degrees can make the difference between a bonanza or a bust. I've never been outside in March, can't help you there.
Let me know if you need any info on the area. Gregg

Yellowdog - This is the best site for Carolina Skiff information. www.fryingpantower.com is the best place for fishing information for the North Carolina coast. I map has all the gps# you need to fish this area and you get them for free. Imap also has free sst for the area and all the local info on what's biting. In March, Oak Island will be good for redfish, trout, bluefish, and bonita will be on the nearshore ARs.

Hey Ron - I don't know about the Virginia area having a site like that. I know that they have one for South Carolina also. It is an incredible resource tool for fishing the NC coast and all the people network together on whats biting, where, and on what.

Try http://www.mrc.virginia.gov/vsrfdf/reef.shtm

If this link doesn't work go to google and type in "virginia reefs"
it should be the first one to pop up.

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS

Thanks guys! I fished last year down there and it's a beautiful place. The marshes behind Bald Head Island are sweet. Took a little time to figure out the best way to get back there to them. We went out of Lockwood Folly Inlet one very calm day and cruised the beaches. That's what got me to thinking about the reefs. The Frying Pan site has got some good info-thanks.
