I know nothing about trolling. I have never been on a boat that was trolling, but the Humminbird keeps showing me deep places in my path that are always full of fish hanging around the bottom. Not sure that they will bite, but I plan to give them opportunity. I had a good time this morning doing some planning.
Junk box portable down rigger.
Will it work????

LOOKS GOOD YOU CAN SWING IT TO THE SIDE !
AND GET A WIDER SET !
You'll either need several pounds of weight or a planer , to keep it down while moving forward...

I took it out and played with it this past Thursday, in a river near the house. Depth control was no problem, I put 50 lb. mono leader on the reel, and tied loops with red wool flagging each 5'. So it is just count the knots and add a little Kentucky windage and it shows up on the fishfinder right on target.
I do need a heavy weight. At 2.8 mph, it moves outside the cone of the fishfinder. I've got some 3 lb. lead ingots that I will try next week.
The biggest problem was keeping the lines straight as I lowered the weight into the water. I was using a 7' spinning rig with 10# mono. I couldn't see the line, and kept fouling the lines an I lowered them in the water. This after noon, I rigged a 5' bait casting rig with dark green dyneema.
Learning as I go. Its fun.
