The Poop Deck on Seawall in Galveston has to be the best watering hole around. Best views (human and beach / gulf). 003

Finally got a chance to ride out onto the Texas City Dike about two weeks ago. Devastation was unbelieveable. Absolutely nothing left. Saw a posting on the TKF website that said the first set of ramps were open. Have not got up the guts to go into East Bay since Ike. Have been staying in Trinity Bay. Hit and miss. Reds are definitely in the Trinity Marsh but finding them has been tough.

Top Water Grill in San Leon on Aprils Fools Point, they got bait, ice, beer, great seafood and view of the bay. Before Ike we would launch there get some Jalapeno Poppers to go and fish all over the Texas City/Dickinson Bay area. Ike destroyed the the place but the owner is rebuilding, CANT WAIT!

Galveston is on the come back and everytime I go down there (couples of times a month) it is night and day difference on how much more it is coming back to normal. Now the fishing has been really good on a hole, have to be careful with debris and the guts that were there last year most are gone this year. Overall it has been exciting to fish and learn new areas and re-learn alot of the same old areas. P.M. when you are on the way down, maybe we can meet up on the water

We haven't been doing this as long as most on this site, but so far our faves are:

Best launch: By far, Pontchartrain Yacht Club, Mandeville. It's free, beautiful, quaint, lovingly cared-for, super-well-maintained, and used by so many people for so many different things. I could enjoy the day just sitting under a Live Oak and watching people come and go. Everyone from people working on their sailboats to bank fishermen in lawn chairs, to Sheriff's deputies in their patrol boat, to joggers, to kids playing baseball in the adjacent park, to dog-walkers, club members sipping mint juleps on the Big House veranda, all frequently enjoying life side by side. Wading birds and gulls gather across the channel, Ospreys fly by, and sometimes dolphins come up in the marina. And to top it off, one has to drive through the wonderful waterfront community of Mandeville to get there. It's icing on the cake launching from that spot.

Best bait spot: Dockside Marina in Slidell. In season, they have live shrimp and minnows in quantity. Get there early, though, or the bait line and launch lines are long.

Most roomy launch, closest to good fishing: This is freshwater, but it has to be the public launch at Butte LaRose in the Atchafalaya Basin, under I-10. When the fish finally recover from hurricanes, it will be a fave again.

2nd fave would have to be public launch at Bayou Sorrell, Atchafalaya Basin. Lots of room, only a few miles from good sac-a-lait and bass fishing.

3rd fave, public launch at Belle River, Atchafalaya Basin. When fishing comes back a bit more there, we'll also be back.

The last 3 are public launches built by the state's DNR Atchafalaya Basin Program, then headed by Sandra Thompson (Hermann). The cost per launch is either free or minimal.

Beautiful day out of the Mandeville Harbor on Bayou Castine.
2 ft. swells with chop turned into almost flat for the 8 mile ride in.
The fish were not biting. I believe that the 1 flounder that came home with me was suicidal.
I love the Pontchatrain, love my DLX, love my E-Tec.
Happy Thanksgiving all.

Hey, great to see your Pontchartrain report. This time of yr I always want to ditch Christmas shopping/decorating/cooking and fish the Causeway. Even though it's hit or miss, the hits are so good we keep coming back. Just got back from N. LA doing family stuff, deer hunting, and helping hubby on daily treks into the wilderness to search for ducks. (We practice "total conservation" duck hunting; we get to shoot a lot and the ducks get to live).

Maybe we'll see you out there soon!
