View Full Version : Looking for a tachometer

I have a j16 with a 25hp tiller steer 2 stroke Yamaha. I fish a lot with just my 4yr old son (40 lbs) in the boat with me. I also have a few friends who go on occasion. They all weigh around 180-200lbs. That is about 150lbs difference, and while that won't matter at all on some boats, there is a very noticable difference on mine. (The weight problem gets even worse, because without my son on board the beer supply can become fairly liberal) I think I need 2 different props but am not really sure where to start. I bought one of those little "tiny tachs" several months ago. It is a cheap, small, digital tach that uses a wire wrapped around the plug wire (I think) to monitor rpms. That would be fine for checking rpms once or twice to get the right size prop, but is not suitable in my opinion for permanent mounting. I'm in the process of rigging my electrical system and it would be really easy to install a tachometer on the panel I am making. Then if my setup changes in the future I won't have to guess at it, I can check my rpms and select the correct prop. Yamaha doesn't make tachs for motors this small. (at least I couldn't find one) Suggestions?

I'm almost positive that they make tachs for all motors.I will look into it for ya.

Maybe I am looking in the wrong spot. I couldn't find it on the Yamaha website. What about a generic?

Teleflex makes a bunch - that's what I had a dealer put on my Yamaha 25. It triggers from the alternator (light coil).

Thanks for the info. When you say "triggers from the alternator (light coil)", exactly how do you connect it?

The dealer installed it, so I can't specifically answer your question, but any Yamaha dealer should be able to help, or maybe somebody hanging around here that's installed one.

Go to http://www.teleflexmarine.com/cgi-bin/frameset2.cgi?site=gauges&type=us&link2=1149
Click on Tech Support
Then under Application information select Tachometer/Outboard with Alternator
At the bottom of that page click 'Review Procedure'
