View Full Version : Boat Size Versus Horsepower

I was just reading a question from a new Carolina Skiff owner.......a question we all see here repeatedly; I just bought an XYZ sized Carolina Skiff. Can anyone give me a recommendation on what size outboard I need, and what prop?

I know we have each forum for each style boat; DLV, DLV, etcetera, and we have the information spread throughout these various forums, about engine sizes and how they are propped. Is there currently any plan to catalog every boat/outboard combination of members in this group, and present that information in one easily accessed format? I believe it would be a tremendous resource, not only to Carolina Skiff owners that are considering repowering or re-propping, but also to dealers setting these boats up, and also for first time buyers, just "sniffing around".

Best regards, Jim

I hear that!

Members here are the most generous lot I've found and I'm sure all will easily help. I'm thinking profile entries can be cross referenced into a data base. Boat/outboard is a great start and could also include prop, WOT top end & hole shot.

Moving forward, that can also extend to radios, gps, tops, etc., but better to add that later or the effort will be too big and not get done.

Do you mean like this "Sticky Post" started back in 2007 ? *006*

Click on this link and read the first post.

Is something like this what your asking about?

Filters on boat, engine, hp, prop. Info would be WOT rpms, cruise, time to plane, and comments.

Nows a good time to remind folks we encourage users to add their baots info into their signature line. (Such as the first 2 posters and my signature)

This let's interested parties to be able to see what type set up a user has and if needed can be contact your posted to, about their set up, top speed & cruising speed, HP,,,etc

This can be done in from your UserCP
For additional info on how to do this see this Signature help (http://www.carolinaskiffowner.com/faq.php?faq=vb3_user_profile#faq_vb3_signatures_av atars)

Harry, the information in the 'sticky', but laid out by boat size, not just random posts, of all sizes. All DLX 2480's and classic 24's, from high HP to low HP; all the 21's, 19's, 16's, etcetera, by HP. There are some folks here (I'm one of them) that are barely one step ahead of using smoke signals..........just not computer savy at all. Some folks can ferret out that information with persistence, but some will bog down, screening through dozens or hundreds of posts, until becoming brain numbed.

I here ya Riverine.
If VB didn't have a template for me to follow while laying out the site, creating forums, etc, I'd be lost. I'm far from a computer guru, more like a dumb linesman with a keyboard;D

If someone would care to create a spread sheet or whatever they're called, with the info you suggest, we'd be glad to host it. I don't have those type of skills or time to invest learning or creating such graph or sheet........... sorry

Let me ask in case anyone reads this and has an interest in tackling such a task.
I'm not real clear exactly what your looking for. The link and sticky we already have and the info that's there, is that what your wanting?
Basically packaged up in a graph or spread sheet?
Of course this would have to be modified and updated as new members and info come in.
EX: Boat length & models listed with outboards and HP?

Thanks again,
Harry

IF I HAD A E-MAIL ADDRESS, I COULD SEND A SIMPLE SPREADSHEET THAT WOULD STORE THE DATA AND A PERSON COULD SELECT BOAT AND MOTOR COMBINATIONS TO SEE WHAT PROPS HAVE ALREADY BEEN USED.
MY ADDRESS IS daniel.c.rice@cox.net
THANKS

Gentlemen
Just a simple list of each type Hull & Length with a Minimum size motor required to plane it with a reasonable load would be a big help !
*kickrock*
Props are like rear end gears HIGH , LOW & COMPROMISE *006*
These Three sizes should be included for each too.

Also
THE PROP HELP GUIDE
The prop Tutor page , I remember had A Sticky on it too Before the "Upgrades" became necessary !
http://boatpropellers.iboats.com/propeller-tutorials/how_to_choose_prop/?session_id=383357208&cart_id=103881624

This page has just NO Direct link to the sales site or Baners ECT ....

I find my self posting this link Every Week for some one *006*

IMO*kickrock*
THEIR HAVE BEEN MANY NEW BOATS IMPROPERLY PROPPED AS A RESULT OF THE ECONOMIC TURN DOWN DRIVING INVENTORY REDUCTION . *006*
Not all dealers but some have !

Craig

P:S:
The old Prop data base was great and required a lot of Work by a lot of people , but has Grown in to a unorganized Monster !

Harry, right now, we already have the forum for Carolina Skiff Models;
J series
DLX Series
DLV Series
Sea Chaser
etcetera.

What I'm proposing would be a one stop location, with each model of Carolina Skiff sub-categorized by size (largest to smallest, according to weight capacity of each individual boat) and each boat size showing current or past outboards being used, with details on weight carried routinely, exact propeller numbers on that particular combination, MPG, maximum MPH, minimum planing speed with X load, etcetera.
A future buyer, or current owner, looking to re-power their boat, could find exact numbers, so they could make better decisions about what to buy.

For example, we have a 'classic' CS 24 (flat bottom). Our main source of power is an Evinrude four stroke (Suzuki in disguise) outboard. Admittedly, a very unusual combination, although performance figures would be great for folks with the same boat, wondering what size "kicker" to get, and what to expect from it.
The factory prop simply had too much pitch, with too small of blades on it. Reverse thrust was almost zero.

I used the formulas in Dave Gerr's Propeller Handbook to arrive at the best prop for that oddball combination. The result was dead on accurate. We humm along quietly at 3 MPH and get 16 MPG. Reverse thrust stops the boat within two feet, at fast idle, by "burping" the throttle.

If we can get all members to submit their particular information, and as you said, keep it updated, we'll have a terrific database to use, instead of trial and error, or total dependence on a Naval Architect's formulas to be correct.I do think a standard format to submit the data would make everything easier to read.

Again to touch on your first post. We could offer experienced opinions on what hp combo might be the best choice for any given boat size or model, but not outboard brand. Some folks like Chevy's others Fords & I like your idea.

A max rating is listed on each model and can always be less and the suggested manufactures max rating

Prop pitch ? I think we could only post (put on sheet) what we have (from real world experinece)
And again would have to be provided from our members

If this sheet comes to be, the current data listed in the 2007 thread could be used as a starting block, with members data entered as it comes in. IMO this would offer realistic (owner tried & tested info)

So who would like a crack at it?;D

There already exist Caculators on line to calculate prop for a given engine
by boat weight, peformance, length/width.
One is: http://www.mercurymarine.com/propellers/prop-selector/#
The thing we have here is real world with Carolina Skiffs. It just needs to be organized.
