Had my 20 hr service done today. I'm only at 12-15 hrs now.
Now I get 100 hrs of fun before doing anything else. ;D ;D ;D

I have a mobile mechanic who comes to my house. He is a cerified Johnson/evinrude tech. The 4 stroke johnson motors are Suzukis so he knows the motor. $177.00 to change oil/filter/lower unit and inspect/tighten everything listed in the owners manual.
I can do it myself, but I wanted a paper trail of reciepts in case I ever need a warranty repair.

Hey Rich,
I called Steve's yesterday and got set up for 6/5 to get my 20 service done. I asked what they do and she said they change the oil & filter, and also adjust the valves. Don't know if your guy did or mentioned that ??
I also asked if they changed the foot oil and she said no. In the book it says to replace that in the 20 hr service ??? Guess I'll do that myself, but I'll be sure to point that out to them.

Harry, I'm sure Steve will do that if asked to. I guess he doesn't feel its needed at 20 hrs and probably waits till 50. I usually have him do a service every fall before I bring it home to Pa. Don't have him winterize it cause I usually use it up here until Nov. or so. Then it stays in the heated garage until I dig it out, literaly, for the spring.....I usually start it up every couple of weeks with the earmuffs and hose hooked up to keep it purring like a kitten.
Just got done putting a new plug on for the lights. The wires got cut somehow. Anyway Steve is a good mechanic.

Harry,
The manual doesnt state that the valves get adjusted at 20 hrs unless I missed something. It also says the lower should be changed. There is a chart in the manual that shows the intervals. The new motor will have metal from break in wear in the fluids, so I would do it.

Yup, there good people over at Steve's.
The only thing in the book about valves is "inspect" and that's at 200 hrs.
I'm just telling you what she said.
If they don't change the foot oil, I will. I just wanted some documentation that it was serviced at 20 hrs. I will point it out that the book says to do it and have them take care of it.
I worked on cars, motors & 2 stoke outboards my whole life. Don't know much about 4 stroke outboards but would assume they have hydrulic lifters such as in a car engine and are self adjusting.... ??? Either way I'll be sure to ask the guys doing the work or Steve himself. The person I talked to was a secratay I guess....

I spoke to Tina there recently and she is great. My experience with motors is limited to 2 stroke dirt bike/atv rebuilds. Reed valves in them. My mechanic told me 200 hrs for valve adjustment which appears to be consistent with the manual.
