There is a plastic weld gun sold by Harbor Freight tools, before you do anything, you have to empty that tank.

If you are going to put heat or fire to it fill it up with water first. An empty fuel take will explode if ignited.*popcorn*

I've done worse.
Unfortunately, next to nothing sticks to that plastic and I wouldn't trust any manufacturer that tells you anything different than replace it.
That said and since I'm chea ahhh thrifty and its on top, if that was my tank I might try a temporary fix of fastening a piece of 16 or 18 gauge stainless over 5200 with stainless screws and 5200 and I might even go as far as 3/8" drilling the ends of your cut to avoid propagation.
If you as diligent as I with changing temporary to permanent, you may not want to go that route.
Good luck.

The patch will fail at the time to do the most damage and harm. "Murphy Lives"

Get a new tank and upgrade to an ethanol resistent one at the same time.
That sounds like to big a hole to practically plug imo.

I've got a stainless steel tank that I'll give you, if you want to replace your plastic tank with it. Shoot me an E-mail if you want it.

Once you are VERY sure you've gotten rid of the gas, I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't heat up something like a trowel really hot and melt the two sides of the cut together. Works on many kinds of plastic, including polyethelyne, which I think is what that tank is made of. That way you don't have to worry about whether your adhesive will stick to the plastic well or whether the gas wil dissolve the patch material (gas is a very good solvent for many things).
Once I did it, I'd fill it with water and turn it upside down to make sure ti didn't leak.

REPLACE THAT TANK !
THAT IS A LOT OF FIRE TO BE SITTING RIGHT ON TOP OF !
NOT REALLY THE PLACE TO SAVE A BUCK HERE !
You could save it and repair it as a holding / gray water tank for fresh water wash down ...
