What a day it was.
Dad and I had so much fun last week there we wanted to try it again.
Fished the flats just north and east from the De Soto boat ramp, And in just 1 drift and a few anchorings we caught over 30 Sea Trout between us! Thats the good news, the semi bad news is all but 3 were under sized. We didn't keep any anyway so it really didn't matter we still had a blast. Hooked a few lady Fish ( poor mans tarpon) and as a guy from work said best, If those dang Lady Fish ever teach the other fish how to act when hooked, we as fishermen are done for. Well with all the small fry in the area it seems we have a healthy fishery and large trout are just inches away!
After a exhusting morning we decided to go and look for some critters that live in deeper water and went over to the Sky Way Bridge, and this is when things got REAL interesting.
We managed to hook a couple Gag or black groupers, not big enough to keep but still fun to catch. Then my Dad reels in and on end of his line is a 12 inch Squid! All the years I've been fishing, only squid I've seen were in the freezer section of food stores! It almost gets to the surface, clinging to Dads bait (White buck tail jig and Gulp!) when it shoots a stream of water that leaves the water and just misses my Dad (like a water gun, but thicker stream) and swims or Jets away! I am like wow that was cool. A few seconds later I pull one up, But am ready now and grab the net and scoop it up! It releases ink in the water allows us to snap it's picture and is released. It is now about 3:15 PM I look over towards Sky Way bridge and see a shrimp boat out of the main channel heading towards bridge. I think huumm I guess ships dont just go thru the main channel they also must be able to go thru other span areas. Boy was I wrong! This Drunken fool of a F*&%ing scumbag (see my view of shrimpers here...http://carolinaskiffowner.com/index.php?topic=1036.msg10001#msg10001)
danger to all on water slams his boat at full speed (as reported to Coast Guard by Capt. of the Boat "Whos your daddy" into one of the bumpers/protectors of the bridge, called Dolphins. I saw this as it happened, I saw the ship come to an abrupt stop and the large outriggers slam forward. I say Holy crap! that boat hit the bridge! Just then the sound wave reaches us,.. BOOM! 001 My Dad says dang if he didn't. Shrimper slowly backs up turns around and heads back east into Bay. I am about to call in to my tow company Tow Boat US. to see if anyone has reported this. Small boats are all over this area fishing. Any one there could of been killed if struck by shrimper.  Just then the Capt. of "Whos your daddy" calls the coast guard and asks the question, Any one report said collision?  Coast Guard asks name of Shrimp boat and "whos you daddy" says give me a minute I will chase him down and get it. Some time passes and Capt. of shrimp boat reports He lost steering and throttle but all is ok now. Two different County cop boats show up look at damage and chase down drunken capt. I say drunken because any word he trys to say over two syllables he mangles, such as registration and documentation and name of owner of vessel Oh and he first said this is shrimpin' boat umm shrimping vessel, umm.
