Hey, I'm looking to make a trip this weekend inshore in St. Joe Bay. I'm wanting to get some Berkley Gulp Shrimp for some plastics, and I was leaning towards the New Penny color. I've heard a lot of good things about them, but I haven't fished them. Anyone with some advice on size of the shrimp (I think you can get them in 2, 3, and 4" lengths), size of lead headed hook, etc. would be appreciated. I think the weather's going to be great.

Thanks in advance.

i normally use the 3" size in New Penny, White, or Nuke Chicken on either an 1/8th, 1/4, or 3/8th ounce jighead depending on winds and current. remember to always tie the jighead to your leader with some form of a loop knot. i use the rapala loop knot and it works great. for most inshore fishing i use a 3' piece of either 15lbs (for trout) or 25lbs (for redfish) fluourcabon leader tied to my power pro with a uni to uni knot.

I agree with Slim, 3" new penny or white here. If the tails get chewed off, don't throw those scraps away, keep 'em in the jug......we use them to tip jigs and catch redfish and other species....they may not look good, but they still leave the scent trail and stretch those $hrimp$ just a little bit further!

that's a great tip chum, keep 'em as long as possible. at 6 bucks a pack i stretch these things as far as possible. once my gulps are no longer big enough for a jighead, i put them in a separate container and use them on my small hooks for catching pinfish. i will use a piece until it's the size of a small bread ball. i've found the biggest culprits for destroying gulps are the dang pufferfish!

Hey I'm new around here but I'm a guide on the gulf coast in the big bed area. Try using a saltwater assassin jig in the 4"sea shad pattern. The electric chicken, orange gold shinner, and canndy corn are hot colors for us. We use them under a Cajun Thunder cork with about a 18" to 20" leader and pop the cork pretty hard about every 4 seconds. When your letting it sit be ready for one to hit it. Fish this in 3 to 5 feet of water on the grass flats and I would put money on you to catch fish this time of year.

The saltwater Assassin jigs are cheaper and the bait fish don't bother them near as bad good luck.fishingsmilie*
