I'm a spinner guy and never had me a real nice conventional reel until today !

I went ahead and got me an AVET SX left hand retrieve. Since I'm used to holding the rod in my right hand and reeling with the left, it was real important to me to have the same in my conventional reel.

It was a few bucks more for this, but since I was getting a beauty I figured why not?

Anyone have an AVET or experience with them?
She's a nice little reel, with lever drag, 9 lbs of drag on strike, and 14 lbs on full, with a 5.3 ratio and weighing in at only 14 oz.
Had it spooled up with 40 lb moss green power pro briaded line.

The drag is ultra smooth while trying it at home.
She's on a Shamino jigging stick, can't wait to try her out!!! *rod*

Like briging a new born home from the hospital. (Took the photo on my lap. Notice the steering wheel of the line truck) ;D

Hey Harry,
I went fishing for a week in Panama last winter on the Coral Star - a mothership operation that fishes the Hannibal Banks area on the Pacific side. This operation was bought out by Avet reels about 1 1/2 - 2 years ago, so all they use are Avet reels. While we were there, we caught numerous dolphin to 20 pounds, Pacific Sails to 100 pounds or so, snappers, jacks, mackerel, bonito and even a 250 pound yellowfin tuna! Never had a problem with any of the Avet reels. They are a quality piece of equipment that can handle lots of abuse and some big, mean, fish from what we saw.
We never did any real casting with them because we were trolling or dropping baits down to the bottom, but I do know that surfcasters use some models of Avet reels, so they obviously can be cast.
Anyway, I think you got yourself some good gear.

In my opinion there are few better reels on the market. We troll with those reels up in the river for monster rockfish in the spring. Those reels can handle those monster rockfish in the current with no issue. There are few other reels that i have used that are so smooth, lightweight and can retrieve line that fast.

LOL,
Now if only we can get the weather to cooperate we can try it out.

Calling for 40-50 MPH winds today. Tomorrow: Cloudy and wind...... *004*

I think after this blow it should be (the fall run) ON !!!

Harry, i have the same reel but in blue, loaded with 40 lbs power pro red braid on a 7' Donart (local custom rod maker), i call it striper killer, the torque tha thing has is amazing. Anyway, if you don't know about it, on this reel you can adjust the drag even with the lever at strike.

Cool so you have and used one. Who long you had it?
I watched the dvd that came with it. Adjust the drag with it in strike? Tell me more. What I saw it said pre set the drag in the bait or off position. Then use the lever to adjust tension, put it in strke, or full for a max of 14 lbs.....

On a side note its blowing 30 mph WNW today and there was a flock of birds 3 blocks wide and about 300 ft off the beach !!!!

FYI,
After having this reel seated on the rod I intend to use it on, I know longer feel the left hand model will fit the bill for me. I took it back and went with a right hand model and moved up a class to the AVET MXL 5.8 model.

MUCH better fit and feel.
One turn of the handle pulls in a whooping 38" of line too *003*

i've been using the SX and MXL for a few years now and love the reels. Each one is backed with 300 yards of 20 and 30 pound braid, respectively, and then topped off with 20 pound mono. Both reels have caught numerous sailfish and mahi and always perform great. There's just something about a screaming Avet drag that makes me smile....fishingsmilie*
