Well lemme tell ya about a story, of a guy who has never hooked a striper......so we went out today beating all over savannah trying to find some fish, then we find some "structure" so we are throwing some sort of bait at it when i feel...."thump" then just light tension, so i figure i snagged a weed or something. so for giggles i decide to set the hook just to be sure. Well that is when all *&@# breaks loose, i have 30lb braid on 26lbs of drag and i get smoked......he heads straight for this "structure" and proceeds to weave a quilt, i hold tension on him for a good 15 minutes just hoping he would work his self back out. i decide then to just give him slack and see what he does........whod of guessed it....but he kept running, so finally after 25 minutes i had to break him off. I have never felt so defeated, im litterally depressed right now, i keep playing it in slow motion trying to think of anything that i could have done to get him to the boat.....im just emotionally and physically beat. Well im gonna go curl up to something and cry for a bit. Any ideas?

We actually had 4 hookups, i only had 1, my buddy had 3. I got smoked that one time, and hopefully that will be the last at least for this week. The trick here is the structure is so close you ahve to stop them and turn them in 10yds or less or else your screwed. i didnt expect the bite to be so suttle so i gave him time to get wrapped around stuff, hopefully with my new found knowledge i can stop him. i mean probly not but ill try!

ps he actually was moving the boat as he was dragging through the structure......so im thinking a good 5lbs or so :)

Now your that much closer to netting him the next time. cause you learned something.....just because they are big does not mean they have to jump all over the bait......the few I have caught just more or less sucked it in and did not bend the rod in half with the strike............go get em Willie

Dont feel to bad man, I was fishing one of the largest striper (payout) tournments I had ever entered and things were going ok. it was a 3 fish weigh in and we had 2 in the box around 12-15 lbs. we had heard a call over the vhf saying that one other team had just landed a 25 pounder. we did the math and were sure if we could land one 25 lbs. or larger we would have a shot. we were trolling u-rigs on downriggers when out of the blue our deep line started to sing that song. we fought that fish for around 20 min. and had him beside the boat. we knew right then we had this thing in the bag. This was a monster striper. one of the largest I have ever had at the boat. Just as I reached the net to him he went to thrashing around and threw the hook. 004 004 004 004 :'( :'( :'(. So dont feel to bad my friend it happens to the best of us 001 all we can do is go back out and try for a repeat. best of luck next time bro. 012 012

I'd put some grenades in your tackle box - for some Texas style fishing! They never get away from these things. ;D

Fayetteguy,
I know the pain... My dad always fished with cuesticks.... I know why after that first time I fish wrecks with him for the cow bass. Dad had these fishing rods that were past down from his dad (now they are mine). You know how you bend a pole to find it's backbone when you are looking to buy a new stick; well dad poles just about don't bend. 6 foot cue stick the reel is a sidewinder. just a 6" round spool mounted to the side of the cue stick and 150 yards of 80lb. test mono. Ande brand I think. Dad used tarred braided leader line to big black short shank hooks. We used big surf clam bellie and some heavy sinker. Believe it or not you could feel a tiny crab eating that bait. So when heavy cow bass came a calling you wait to feel that lunker sucking that bait, set that hook and he was going nowhere except up!
I remeber this time dad hooked into a cow(over 40 lbs.) when he was sleeping and that bass carried him into something. Dad kept up that tug o war for 30 minutes and the bass lossed.
Thank god for fiberglass cue sticks and sidewinders

Well the fishing has been put on hold briefly, a sugar refinery blew up here last night and it happens to be right on the river where i was fishing. Plus you have to drive by the plant on the way to the ramp, so i may not get to fish there for a few days, who knows, maybe they will have it sorted out by monday :)

im going to try a different area this weekend it think, i never knew sugar was combustible....but it is.

If the sugar spills over into the river, just think how sweet that meat will taste once you get that hog in the boat .... ;D
