Yam,yam, yam, nice fish.Loki, you are very lucky to fish in february 004 004 004
Great catch Loki. 010 010 010 Cobia - solid muscle from nose to toes. Did you sight the fish and toss 'em a bait, or did he just latch onto your bait/lure, sight unseen? How many runs did he make? What rig were you using when you hooked 'em? Did the battle take long? Was there any structure around for him to run to?
Not many fish will keep me close to shore when the seas are right, but when the cobia arrive (usually in May) I try and stay close to the inshore and nearshore structure and buoys just to try and catch one of these power-houses.
Looks like the "Loki's" will be feasting on cobia steaks for quite a while 013

Yeah Baby!!! 003 I bet that rascal was fun to catch! Details pleeeeze... slow motion playback if ya got it.

I was bottom fishing and the next thing I know these two cobia swim right up to the boat. I didn't have anything rigged up to site cast. (like I should have) So I tried casting my dead grunt at him that I was using to bottom fish, they both swam up to it but wouldn't eat.
Anyhow, I get my other Pflueger Contender G70 rod-and-reel combination and throw a Berkley Gulp Squid soft plastic on it and toss it in their general direction, they couldn't resist it. As I was fighting this fish the other one stayed right with him through almost the entire fight, not until I got the fish boatside did the other one break off and leave. Shame really, the other one was bigger!
The cobia made about five really strong runs, it was a fun 15-20 minutes fighting the fish. Open ocean, 70 feet to the bottom, no structure for him to break me off.

Thanks guys! This being my first one and all, I'm mighty proud of it! ;D
Berkley gulp squid, eigh? That looks like a darn good bait to have along for a situation like that. Was it a 3, 5, 8, or 11" squid. What color, if you don't mind sayin'? http://www.charkbait.com/cs/csc_BerkleyGulp.htm
The cobia I've landed have all come from live bait tossed at 'em after they appeared near the boat - but I'm gonna get me some a them gulp squids 010 010 011

Nice job buddy.
My first and last cobia was a 22 pounder. got him in Charolette harbor area. I think I posted it here a while back. That was about 10-15 years ago.

What a nice fish and WoW fishing in Feb. what a trip!!!
I remember catching one of those cobia things when fooling around off of Wrightville Beach pier( n.c.). If I remeber right it was the Johnie Mercy pier???
006 That is going back 28 years. 006
What a fighter...hooked it good... walked it to the beach didn't want to lose the fish by lifting it up to the pier.
I cooked it in a pan with a little milk, paprika, parsley flakes and lemon slices.
I guess you could say I poached it... Boy Was that Good!!!
